Vegetable Momos recipe

Momos or street dumplings have now become the most popular kids food out there. Momos find their origin in Tibet but they are now a hugely popular food in India as well, particularly in North India. Versatile food that it is, momos are available in a wide variety including chicken, mutton and prawns. But today let’s shine the light on vegetable momos.

Ingredients of Vegetable Momos

These dumplings are spilling over with healthy veggies like carrots and cabbage sauteed with onion, garlic, soya sauce, vinegar and dark pepper. The ideal custom made vegetable momos fill in as the best evening snacks.

The Dough: 2 cups maida or refined flour, 1/2 tsp salt,  1/2 tsp baking powder

The Filling: 1 cup carrots (ground), 1 cup cabbage (ground), 1 tbsp oil, 1/2 cup onion (finely cleaved), 1 tsp garlic (slashed), 1 tsp soya sauce, Salt, 1/4 tsp vinegar, 1/4 tsp dark pepper.

How to Make Vegetable Momos

  1. Make a mixture of the maida, salt and baking powder, then knead it into a stiff dough with water.
  2. Heat oil in a pan and add the chopped onion and garlic.
  3. Saute over a high flame then add the chopped carrots and cabbage. Stir over high heat till glossy.
  4. Take the pan off the stove and mix in the soya sauce, salt, vinegar and black pepper.
  5. Roll the dough till it is thin (translucent) and cut into 4″-5″ rounds.
  6. Take the round, wet the edges and place some filling in the center.
  7. Bring the edges together to make a cover over the filling. Twist to seal and fill the rest of the rounds in the same way.
  8. Steam for nearly 10 minutes and your vegetable momos will be ready to eat. Serve with soya sauce and chili sauce.

What are Momos

Momos are dumplings prepared with flour and a flavourful stuffing that can be made of veggies, seafood, chicken, or paneer (cottage cheese).

Method of cooking

Momos can be steamed, baked, or deep-fried. We prefer steamed momos over fried ones. This recipe is for making steamed momos.

Savory stuffing

The recipe listed above has a filling of mixed veggies. The veggies used are a combination of cabbage, carrots, french beans, capsicum, and onions. If you like, you could also use white button mushrooms for a meaty texture and a nice umami flavor.


The dough for momos is prepared with all-purpose, refined or maida flour. But you can also make it with whole wheat flour as a healthier option.
